Greetings and Congratulations from Beaverton, Oregon (Pack 383). Your
achievement of the Eagle is a great accomplishment. My name is Peter Van
Houten, and currently I am the wearer of many hats. I'm a cubmaster, bear
den leader, Council PowWow program chairman, God & Country counselor/teacher
for my church, Sunday School teacher, and baseball coach. And in my spare
time you can usually find me catching up on my sleep! :-) Right now we're
about ready to graduate our Bears (which my son is) to Webelos. He's very
excited, and looking forward to becoming a Boy Scout! Would you care to
share any insights on your experiences about Boy Scouting? It's usually the
older experienced boys (Eagles) that have that special spark and ability to
excite the new boys. Kris (that's my sons name) is looking forward to the
camping and backpacking. When he's older we'll probably make a trek to
Philmont.
I received my Eagle in 1973, Troop 315 in Pocatello, Id. I enjoyed Scouting
so much, that when my son became Cub Scout age I jumped back in with full
force. My co-workers call me 'Peter Van Scouten' because I love Scouting so
much!
I can somewhat understand what you're going through! One of my co-leaders
and very good friend was diagnosed with cancer last December. It was tough
for him personally, and for his family. He is a very energetic guy, who
loves to be active in all activities, as I'm sure you are. He was also his
son's baseball coach last year, and he didn't let his cancer or treatment
stop him from being a coach this year! Fortunately our prayers for him have
been answered as the treatment and surgery was a success, and he's on his way
to a full recovery. My prayers are with you for a full and swift recovery,
and to return to doing that which you love.
If you would, send me your name and adress and my den will send you a big Cub
Scout Get Well card! Also, I'd love to hear how you're doing! Sometimes
you may think you're all alone; but there's a good number of people out here
who care about you (even if we haven't met you) and our praying for you!
Being a part of Scouting does not limit you to your Troop, their exists A
Worldwide Fellowship and brotherhood of people who care...It's called
Scouting!
God be with you!
Your brother in Scouting . . .
