Jim Lindberg asked what goes on at a District Cub Scout Shield competition.
Well in our District it is an annual event where a representative Six (see
note below) from each pack takes part in a series of bases (such as road
safety, handicraft, knots etc). On each base they are marked as a team on
such things as:-
How well they worked together as a team
How well did they pay attention to what they were told
Did they Do Their Best
Did the Sixer/Seconder help the weaker members of the team
General Attitude
etc etc
At the end of the competition all the marks are added up, and the team with
the most points wins the trophy. There is a large shield inscribed with the
names of all the previous winners, which they keep for a year, and a small
replica for the pack to keep in their trophy cabinet which is also
inscribed.
Each pack is asked to provide a base, and the district provides several
more, at least one of which will be something special (this year for example
we had an RSPCA inspector talking about the stray dog problem, and what not
to keep as pets).
The shield normally runs for about four hours, and is meant to be a fun
event (one of the bases is always a drink and snack break). The Cubs always
seam to enjoy it and most packs come back year after year.
NB. It does not need to be an actual six, but must have at least one Sixer,
one Seconder and two to four other cubs who must not be either a Sixer or
Seconder.
PS. For those of you who don't know RSPCA stands for Royal Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
