AIDS Education

Mary Ann Albin (MALBIN%EAGLE@THAIGUM.DIR.TEXAS.GOV)

As someone who has been periferally involved in placing AIDS
education in a school district, please remember that the
curriculum developed is "Age appropriate." They do not
demonstrate comdom use to kindergartners.

There are other ways to transfer blood and body fluids, these are
the things that are addressed. Also, explaining what AIDS is,
what it isn't, that it is OK to touch a person with AIDS, etc.
The facts, not the paranoia. Knowledge is power. And if one
child's life is saved because of this information, it is worth
any amount of money.

AIDS safety also needs to be addressed in the First Aid
curruculum. I have heard some Boys Scouts say they would be
afraid to give Mouth-to-Mouth or apply direct pressure to an open
wound because of the fear of AIDS. Is this fear being addressed
the the BSA or GS first aid curruculum? What are the facts? Has
administration of First Aid changed with the advent of AIDS?

I am not saying these feelings of hesitation are right or wrong.
That is NOT the issue. Just -- is it being addressed?
