Re: "Scouts council to offer AIDS education"

Here's my 2 cents worth on this :)

To me it sounds like they are tackling a problem that needs dealing with, and
in a sensible and perceptive way. From reading what was posted here it is
clear that they have thought long and hard about doing this, and discussed both
content and implications amongst themselves as well as consulting parents.

> Have the GSUSA sold their soul? Is this the purpose of the GSUSA?

I don't think that changing a programme to meet new needs is selling your soul.
I am not sure what the mission statement is for GSUSA - but I know that this
sort of education would fit into our mission statement which includes wording
along the lines of "to prepare girls for the future." (i just had a hunt
everywhere to find something with the exact wording, but can't lay my hands on
it at present :) )

> Do you want your 5 year old girl learning about condom use?

I doubt very very much that they are intending to teach 5 year olds about
condom use. I would think that there will be different levels to the education
program, and that these will be applied according to age and maturity of the
recipients.

> Is this "needs of the girls"?

Yes, I think it probably is. I believe it is a lot better to face up to things
and recognise that there are things we can do protect ourselves. I think it is
as important as self-defence classes that are now a normal part of our
education system.

I would also believe that it will really only be a small part of the total
GSUSA package, and that hiking, cooking, service, fun and adventure will still
all be there in large quantities. Be careful that it doesn't get blown way out
of proportion.

All just my opinion. Way to go GSUSA Northwest Georgia!
Anne :)
