Re: $50,000 from Levi S.

Well, I'm glad Rick Clements made his comments before I read Kevin's
original post about GSUSA and HIV. This is a reply to Steve's letter
on the same subject, but isn't a reply just to Steve.

First: Rick is right. Let me go further. 5yr olds are DAISIES. They
really don't do much, they are like Tiger Cubs. Just because the ages
of the girls in Scouting is 5-17, doesn't mean they all get the info.

Second: Girl Scouts have programs on all sorts of "sensitive" topics-
like suicide prevention. Special courses are needed to teach/present
these topics. I am willing to bet that the same set up will be used
for this topic. Some/all? require parental consent.

Third: One of the reasons a Boy Scout Leader I met at Pow-Wow didn't
let his daughter join Girl Scouts was because GS taught the girls
things like careers, instead of cooking. (Sound familiar Kevin? Who
says dinosaurs are extinct?) Girl Scouts promote all sorts of thinking,
learning, and doing; either useful, fun or both. If teenage girls in GA.
are getting HIV, then they need prevention lessons somewhere. So do the
boys, since sex is a two person activity. I'll bet the BSA won't take
THAT on though.

Fourth: So why is Levi's presentation to Girl Scouts a direct result
to their non-participation with the BSA? We all know why there is a
problem with corporate money, but the Levi company could have presented
the grant to a number of organizations. Perhaps they thought the GScouts
could get the job done. And we don't have the same problem as BSA, (uh -
corporation-wise that is).

Last: Think before you write. Do you know how INSULTING it is to read:
"What ever happened to camping, cooking, and hiking"? Or that G Scouts
only get funded to provide PR as well as a back-handed slap at the BSA?
Check out "suspend" on your computer. Re-writes are always better - this
is my third draft. The first one exploded in flames.
