What APO is can vary a lot from place to place. At Carnegie Mellon, I
never joined, but my sister was pretty active. My impression was that
the group took the idea of it being a service fraternity seriously.
It's not that people didn't have a lot of fun through the
organization, they did, but that wasn't the whole point.

When I visited my girlfriend (now my wife) at Davis and Elkins (c.
1985), the only thing that distinguished APO from any of the other
frats was that they allowed women to be `brothers' and appeared to
consume more alcohol. Elizabeth was shocked to hear that my sister,
who's a fairly conservative person in general, was active with a
`group of degenerates' like APO.
