Let me introduce myself. I am Assistant Cubmaster and a Den
Leader at Pack 56 in the Potomac District of the National
Capital Area Council. Our pack meetings, Blue & Gold Banquet,
Pinewood Derby and other activities are held at Westbrook
Elementary School in Bethesda, Maryland, in suburban Washington,
DC. Westbrook's PTA is our chartering organization, and we
have had a quality unit for several consecutive years.
I am also a Unit Commissioner within teh (sic) the Potomac
District for Pack 8, Troop 8 and Pack 1320.
Within the National Capital Area Council, I have had the
opportunity to complete Fast Start training for Deb (sic)
Den Leaders and Cubmasters, Cub Scout Leader Basic Training,
Pow Wow, monthly roundtables, "University of Scouting" at
Catholic University in February and various other training
programs. Webelos Outdoor Training will be available for
me when I become a Webelos Den Leader in roughly two years.
(I am the leader for my son's den; he will receive his Wolf
patch later this winter, his Bear patch one year thereafter,
and become his first Webelos year in the fall of 1995.)
I have also had the opportunity to view the Unit Commissioner
Orientation vie (sic) videotape and complete Unit Commissioner
Basic Training. At George Mason University in northern
Virginia, the College of Commissioner Science will be held
in March.
I hope this forum will provide me with suggestions on how to
make scouting a fun experience for my son and for his fellow
scouters. To be sure, both Brian and his fi (sic) friends at
Pack 56 enjoy their activities, and parents of my cubs have
complimented me on my enthusiasm and on the program generally.
What I hAve found to be particularly exciting is the fact that
scouting embodies so many of the activities that boys abnd (sic)
and their ram (sic) families woyu (sic) would, could, or should
do anyway -- such as learning basic indoor and outdoor skills,
learning about duty and responsibility and about the world
around them.
On January 17, I arranged for Pack 56 to attend the Washington
Bullets vs. San Antonio Spurs game at USAir Arena in suburban
Washington; on January 29, my den will go on a field trip to a
place called FutureKids Computer Learning Center, which will help
my cubs work on their Computer Fun Arrow Point elective.
In addition to general guidance on how I can best serve my cubs
within Pack 56, and on how I can best serve the packs and troop
for whom I am Unit Commissioner, I also would like suggestions on
where I can take my wife, my son and myself over a long summer
weekend along the Eastern Seaboard for a fun, family-oriented
scouting experience. I feel that distance and budgetary considerations
would not make it possible for me to think about Philmont anytime
in the near future.
I look forward to everyone's input.
