First, I may be biased, but please consider starting an Explorer
Post. If the boys in the troop arn't interested, it can be an
all female post. If the post has fun, then they boys will get
interested! (end of commercial)
Being located in the "Land of Enchantment", you should have no
shortage of places to go and things to do! I frequently spend
many hours in a car just to get to your backyard! ;-)
Some of my favorites:
Lincoln National Forest (located around Cloudcroft, NM)
Lots of bueatiful moutains and trails for backpacking or car
camping and many church camp facilites that will allow other
groups to use them when camp is not in session. Also stop by
the Solar Observatory in Sunspot. Very interesting and a
beatiful view of the White Sands area.
Carlsbad Caverns National Park, NM
There is the main tourist cavern as well as another that is
more "wild" and is availble for group tours with prior
arrangements. (At least it used to be. One of the kids in
my Post is going to be researching this as a possible stop
on our way to Philmont this summer.) There are also some
other caves in the area, and I can get more info if anyone
is interested.
Carson and Santa Fe National Forests (Santa Fe, NM area)
Again pretty mountains etc. I havn't camped there yet, this
will probably be another stop on our Philmont trip! Also in
this area is Rafting down the Rio Grande (Taos), the museums
in Los Alamos, the Square in Santa Fe (great shopping (not meant
to be sexist)), Taos Peublo, Bandiler National Monumnet (Anazasi
riuns and backpacking trails) ... this list could get looong.
Guadalupe Mountains National Park (Texas)
Backpacking and the tallest peak in Texas
Big Bend National Park (Texas)
If you go in the summer, stay in the Chisos Basin. You will
roast anywhere else! Seriously, the basin can be 20-30 degrees
cooler than the river area. The basin has backpacking and horse
riding trails, as well as a car campground and motel. Rafting
guides are available in Study Butte and Lajitas, TX. It is a
very big area with much to see and do. As the locals say "If you
you only have one day to see Big Bend, find a shady spot on the
river and cry". Also many interesting things nearby in the Fort
Davis area.
Anyway, there are a few of my favorite places. If you want _more_
information please send me an email, and we can save net bandwidth.
Good luck!

Lynn McKee
