The Air Force Academy Event is one which has been conducted for many years
and for the past seven years have been supported and sponsored by the
Cadets at the Academy and the Pikes Peak Council. A key player this year
in the event, was Eagle Scout and Explorer Matt Brown who is a second
year cadet. He was largely responsible for the publicity obtained for the
event from newspapers and tv coverage. Packets were sent out to Denver
Area, Longs Peak, Pikes Peak and Rocky Mountain Councils, all of whom had
troops there, and possibly a few from out-of-state. Approximately 800 cub
Scouts and 2500 Boy Scouts were present. Matt and his colleagues are
interested in expanding participation from other councils at next years
event. I was only able to see the end of it due to a prior commitment, but
what I saw was *very impressive*.
A number of Explorer Posts were present to support functions such as first
aid, rescue and communications. For the first year the event was
"snowless" and actually quite warm. Other years have been more in keeping
with the name of the event.
Matt is on e-mail through explorer-net@scouter.com if you want to forward
comments or questions to him about next year's event.
