listserver etiquette

For every useful piece of information someone posts on this listserver,
there are probably 20 pieces of junk mail. I am slightly dismayed that
intelligent folks such as are involved with scouting cannot assess the
difference between comments that are of general information and comments
that are more properly addressed one-on-one.

For example, everyone who subscribes to the list is probably already
aware that they are a subscriber - unless they subscribed while
sleep-typing :). Therefore, are not well served by 15 postings to the
list confirming that the list is still working. Those mailings should go
directly to the person who inquired and clog up his in-box.

When someone makes a general inquiry, it is good net manners to post
replys to that person directly. If many people are responding, the
recipient may advise the list that general discussion is needed, or
present a summary in a single posting. When quoting another posting,
quote selectively if possible.

I think we will all find the list more useful if we place value on
others' time and don't waste it with idle text. Thanks - I've been
holding this back for a couple of weeks and now I feel much better 8)}
