HI, I am a new committee chair for my son's high adventure explorer post.
I applaud your desire to have a more active camping program and am excited
about such a well trained and involved person getting into Exploring.
Remember, high adventure exploring is more than just camping. Its a 3
pronged program.
I do however, have a couple of questions about your scout troop
What part of the country are you from? We are located in the flats of
California's central valley and there is nothing to do unless you drive 2
hours. It could be the reason you stay close to home is that you are
somewhere that has scenery and camping.
Why doesn't your troop go more? You need monthly outing to get quality
unit and that is a real goal for most of us. At our annual planning
conference we have to eliminate places rather than find places to go. Every
year we have 2 high adventure activities in the troop. Usually one
backpacking trip for beginners and one for the older scouts. Does your
council offer high adventure training for trek leading? I cannot believe
that if you put together a plan with your older scouts your committee
wouldn't approve it. Signing up for Philmont is an easy start as they
provide the equipment and 2 days of trail guides. Since the boys run the
program, put the bug in a couple of ears and then be prepared to lead the
event. We've done the Grand Canyon rim to rim to rim 3 times, Philmont 3
times, Lassen Nat'l Park 2 times, and multiple Sierra Nevada hikes. The
linch pin is having adults who are willing to lead. Often we open these
long trips to others in the district when we don't have enough scouts to
fill them.
